Plant Protection and Environment

Due to recent dramatic declines especially of bees and other insects and the recent ban of some neonicotinoids in the EU the loss of biodiversity has increasingly gained public awareness. On May 23 2018, the German Academy of Sciences (Leopoldina) published a discussion paper based on an expert group meeting held in 2017. "The Silent Spring - on the Need for Sustainable Plant Protection", co-authored by Prof. Juliane Filser, calls for changes in the European authorisation procedure for plant protection products. The article has received considerable attention in the media.

DENANA
Designcriteria for sustainable nanomaterials

The aim of DENANA is the development of criteria for the production of sustainable nanomaterials (siliciumdioxide, cerdioxide and silver). The respective particles are varied in the production process and are tested for their risk potential. In the three years project it is expected to develop criteria for the design of sustainable nanomaterials by fulfilling the requirements of technical applications and minimizing the risk potential.

DFG-Research Group: Nanoporous gold as catalyst

A new transregional DFG-research group has been established in Dec. 2014 which includes a con-sortium of the Universities of Bremen, Oldenburg, Hamburg-Harburg and Free University Berlin. The project is entitled: „Nanoporous Gold – A Prototype for a Rational Design of Catalysts” . It is funded for three years with more than 2 million €.

At the UFT, the joint project
Long-term stable, co-based catalysts for the sabotage reaction operated with load changes have been started, with which the UFT is participating in the DFG priority programme 2080 "Catalysts and reactors under dynamic operating conditions for energy storage and conversion". In addition to the UFT departments of Applied Physical Chemistry and Chemical Process Engineering, the Mechanical Process Engineering department of Prof. Dr. Mädler from the Production Engineering department is also involved.

Dr. habil. Stefan Stolte has been appointed Head of Water Chemistry at the University of Dresden. He is professor for "hydro chemistry".
We congratulate him for this splendid award! Although we have lost a most valuable scientist, we wish him all the best and are sure that he will master all his new tasks.
